Kent Community Recycling - Who We Are

The story so far...

The team at KCR
The Team.
Mike, David, Dave,and Darren.
Val, our blonde bomber was, unfortunately, on leave when the photos of our team were taken.

KCR was set up in 1989 when it became apparent that there was no organisation that could help route material from the general public back to its respective industries. There was also no intermediate body who could raise awareness and then sustain it by providing facilities, and the where with all, to organisations, schools, groups in the community and households.
KCR enabled them to go forward with the then "new" ethos of recycling, whilst ensuring that no-one saw it as a short-term problem.

The Resource Recovery Plant, at Hawkinge, was opened by MP Michael Howard in January 1990.
Chief Executives of districts in Kent attended and everyone was quite sure that the plant was the thing of the future and without doubt would be succesful.
KCR found there was little support immediately following its establishment and in the early days we had to travel as far as Brighton to bring back material to feed the plant.

Even in 2004, 15 years on, the plant was still not running at full capacity, with little more than 1% of households in the areas serviced actually participating in recycling.
KCR had hoped that the Plant would be running at full capacity and that further Plants would have been opened at Sarre and in the area of Sevenoaks, but that has not been possible as yet.
